The following information for patients and parents is provided as a service by the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society.  No endorsement or approval is stated or implied.

Determining if a physician is certified in
Pediatric Infectious Diseases

To receive certification in a specialty such as pediatric infectious diseases, a doctor must complete the required residency and pass written and oral examinations for pediatrics, and then for pediatric infectious diseases, both of which are administered by the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP). The ABP is a member board of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). You may learn whether a pediatrician is board-certified by going to the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) website and selecting Locate a Board-Certified Physician from the quick links menu, or from the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS).  All board-certified physicians are listed on these sites.

Membership in the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society does not indicate that the physician is board-certified in pediatric infectious diseases.

Finding a physician who is a specialist in
Pediatric Infectious Diseases

The Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society does not provide physician referrals.

If you need to find a specialist in pediatric infectious diseases, there are several possibilities.

Your pediatrician or family physician should be able to provide you with the name of a local pediatric infectious diseases specialist. You may also try contacting your county medical society, or the local chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). The national office of the AAP (800-433-9016) can provide you with the telephone number for the local or regional AAP chapter in your area.
American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) provides a free service to verify credentials of physicians.
The American Medical Association's Physician Select online doctor finder provides information on virtually every licensed physician in the United States and its possessions. You can search the more than 650,000 doctors of medicine (M.D.) and doctors of osteopathy or osteopathic medicine (D.O.) by name or medical specialty.
Many pediatric infectious diseases physicians are affiliated with medical schools or children's hospitals. You may also contact the Department of Pediatrics of a local medical school, or the Community Affairs office of a local children's hospital.
